The NHK High School Course program has a long history, dating back to 1990 when it was first introduced as the successor to the "High School Course" program that ran from 1982 to 1989. Over the years, the program has undergone several transformations, including a revamp in 1991 to "Education Seminar: NHK High School Course" to cater to the general audience’s need for systematic learning programs. Following the revision of curriculum guidelines in 2003 and the rise of correspondence high schools, the program was rebranded as "NHK High School Course" to focus on supporting self-study for students at 107 schools nationwide.
