第二次世界大戦中、イギリスでは輸入に頼っていた食料の入手が困難となり配給制となった。庶民的な料理だったベーコンエッグさえぜいたくで食べられなくなった。戦後の日本では政府統制下の配給だけでは物資が不足し、国民の生活は困窮、陰で支えたのが闇市だった。闇市には、日本の女性と米兵の仲をとりもつ代筆屋もあった。１９４５年６月サンフランシスコ会議で国連憲章が採択され、１０月には国際連合が５１の加盟国で発足したIt started in 1990 as the successor program to "High School Course" (1982-1989). In 1991, it was revamped as "Education Seminar: NHK High School Course" to meet the general audience’s need for systematic learning programs. Following the revision of the curriculum guidelines in 2003 and the increase in students choosing correspondence high schools, the title was changed back to "NHK High School Course," and it was broadcast primarily for correspondence high school students at 107 schools nationwide, with the aim of being useful for self-study.
